Privacy Policy

Effective date: [insert effective date]  ·  Last updated: [insert date]

Before you publish this page: this is a starting-point template, not finished legal advice. Fields marked like this need your actual company/legal details filled in. Because your members span multiple countries — including Nigeria and Canada — you should have a lawyer confirm this policy satisfies the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), Canada's PIPEDA, and any other law that applies to where your members live, before this page goes live. Some of the profile data described below (religion, marital/family history) is sensitive in nature and may require extra safeguards or explicit consent mechanisms under those laws.

1.Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how [Legal Company Name] ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you use Destined for Marriage (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

2.Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

Account & profile information

CategoryExamples
Identity & logisticsName, email, age, gender, country of origin, country of residence, diaspora preference, marriage timeline
Compatibility profileReligion/faith, children (existing and desired), education, career, financial values, lifestyle habits, language(s), relocation willingness, marital history, personality traits, and — only if you choose to share it — ethnic sub-identity within your country of origin
Identity verificationGovernment-issued ID and a live selfie/biometric check, collected and processed on our behalf by our third-party verification provider
Payment informationIf you subscribe to a paid tier, billing details are collected and processed by our payment processor — we do not store full card numbers ourselves
Usage & device dataLog data, device/browser type, IP address, and general usage patterns on the Service

Some of this information — such as religion and marital/family history — may be considered sensitive personal data in certain jurisdictions. We collect it only because it is core to how the Service matches you with a compatible partner, and only with your active participation in completing your profile.

3.Sensitive Personal Data & Your Explicit Consent

Certain fields in your compatibility profile are treated by data protection law in many countries — including under the Nigeria Data Protection Act and the EU/UK GDPR framework — as a special, more sensitive category of personal data. On Destined for Marriage, this specifically includes:

  • Religion or faith — your denomination and level of practice;
  • Children status — whether you have existing children, their number and age range, whether you want (more) children, and your openness to a partner's existing children; and
  • Marital history — whether you have never been married, are divorced, or are widowed.

Why we ask for it

These three categories carry meaningful weight in how our matching engine calculates compatibility, because they are frequently decisive factors in whether a marriage-minded match is realistic. We do not collect them for any advertising, profiling, or purpose beyond generating and explaining your matches.

Your consent is separate and explicit

We do not treat your acceptance of these Terms or this Privacy Policy as consent to process this specific data. Before you complete these fields, we ask you to separately and affirmatively confirm — through dedicated, unticked checkboxes presented at that point in sign-up — that you understand what is being collected, why, and that you consent to it. Accepting our general Terms of Service does not, by itself, constitute this consent.

How this information is shown to other members

Your answers in these categories contribute to your compatibility score with every prospective match. A summary derived from this information may appear in the curated match profile shown to a prospective match; your complete, detailed answers are visible to another member only after you have both mutually approved a connection request, consistent with Section 6 (How We Share Information).

Withdrawing consent

You may withdraw your consent to our processing of any of these three categories at any time from [Settings > Privacy]. If you withdraw consent:

  • We will stop using that information in future match calculations;
  • We will delete or anonymize the specific data point, subject to any legal retention obligations; and
  • Your match quality in that category may decrease, since the matching engine will no longer have that information to work with. Withdrawing consent will not otherwise restrict your ability to use the Service.

Note for legal review: if religion, children status, or marital history are mandatory fields required to use core matching features (rather than optional), please confirm with counsel whether consent alone is an adequate legal basis in every jurisdiction you operate in, or whether an additional lawful basis (e.g. contractual necessity) and/or a genuinely optional path through onboarding is required to keep this consent "freely given" under applicable law.

4.How We Use Your Information

  • To create and maintain your account and profile;
  • To verify your identity before activating your profile;
  • To generate your curated match list and compatibility scores;
  • To facilitate connection requests and mutual-approval messaging;
  • To process payments for paid-tier features;
  • To communicate with you about your account, matches, and Service updates;
  • To maintain the safety, security, and integrity of the Service (for example, detecting fraudulent or abusive accounts); and
  • To comply with legal obligations.

We do not use your profile information to serve third-party advertising, and we do not sell your personal information.

6.How We Share Information

We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • With our identity verification provider (e.g. Smile Identity, Youverify, or a similar provider), to verify your identity;
  • With our payment processor, to process paid-tier subscriptions;
  • With other members, in limited form — your curated profile summary is shown to prospective matches as part of the matching feature; your contact details and full profile are shared with another member only after you have both mutually approved a connection request;
  • With service providers who help us operate the Service (such as hosting and email-delivery providers), under confidentiality obligations; and
  • Where required by law, such as in response to a valid legal request.

We do not share your information with advertisers, and we do not sell your personal information to data brokers or other third parties.

7.Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterward to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. [Insert specific retention periods once finalized — e.g. "Account data is deleted within 90 days of account closure, except where retention is required by law."] Identity verification documents are subject to our verification provider's own retention practices, which we will disclose to you separately.

8.Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you;
  • Correct inaccurate information;
  • Request deletion of your information;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing; and
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [privacy/support email address]. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

9.Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a data breach affecting your information, we will notify you and relevant authorities as required by applicable law.

10.Children's Privacy

Destined for Marriage is intended for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from a minor, we will delete it promptly.

11.International Data Transfers

Because our members live across multiple countries, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, including [insert countries where your servers/providers are based]. Where required, we take steps intended to ensure such transfers comply with applicable data protection law.

12.Cookies & Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you logged in, remember your preferences, and understand how the Service is used. [Insert specifics once your analytics/cookie stack is finalized, and add a cookie-consent banner if serving EU/UK visitors.]

13.Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the Service before the changes take effect.

14.Contact Us
